It is maybe time to re-appraise the buddy system.

Clearly many now regard it as an appendage rather than a diving essential.

The questions that need to be asked:
Why am I diving with a buddy?
What is the benefit for me?
What I prepared to sacrice for that benefit?

Like any contract negotiating in detail up front while you are smiling is much easier than trying to patch something together once the expectations are proving to be misaligned.

Perhaps we should have a form of words prior to entry on a buddy dive.
Is this your buddy with whom you have discussed and agreed your dive plan?
He/She is.
Do you promise to respect your buddy & honour your commitments?
I do?
Do you promise to stay faithfully together until surfacing do you part?
I do?

Those who don't want the commitment should stay single!
