Comments: Met up with Ericfriedman and headed out for Deadmans Reef. Did a surface swim out and dropped down to 54 feet of sand. Not sure how we missed it, but we did. I headed North East to try to find the reef, which was wrong, then headed North West and then West where we hit the very end of the reef coming out from shore. Followed the reef back to shore and exited exactly where we entered. Found some better visibility out deep and when we were looking for the reef, we could feel a cool breeze from time to time that let me know the gap in the reef was nearby, but just could not see it. Anyway we had a good time and a good dive. Peaky sea line was using our lights to hunt and kept crowding me.

Spent the day with Jetfixer and Snake-Dr. enjoying a beutiful day at Catalina (after the wind stopped blowing). We were sick and tired of seeing all the 0-5ft vis posts and did a last minute trip to the island, well worth the boat ride. We had a couple relaxing dives at the dive park, and finished off the day with a couple Pacificos while waiting for the boat ride home.

Comments: Dove with my regular buddy, my father, and unfortunately he had a reg free flow that would not stop. He generally has a little problem on shore but I think that is because his tank is a 3300psi Aluminum and we just figured that the reg was not rated for that.

Well anyway we got to depth and he still had a slight free flow situation, just a little hiss, so we surfaced. He was watching his guage closely when we were down and decided that since we had already kicked out and he still had a bunch of air left that we should just do the return at depth. We descended again and kicked in.

It was a bummer that we had to call the dive so quick but we did see a horn shark that was about 18-20 inches long and what must have been at least 20 little round sting rays. I wish we could have stayed down longer considering what we saw in just 10 minutes!

Jennifer, When you getting back in the water?

I think by mid- or end-August I should be healed enough... not for a beach dive at Laguna (unless someone wants to carry my gear up those stairs  ) but a boat dive might be good. I am headed out on a boat on the 4th, but will most likely just be "boat crew" this time...

Now I just need to replace my camera that was burgled... and maybe I can get back into taking UW pics hopefully as nice as Terry's!!

I'd say work the boat angle due to foot injury, but really because the viz is so bad on the shore....

I'm really sorry to hear about you being burgled. I hope that your insurance will cover it.

Another www.divevets.com get together. Many thermoclines at various depths, vis was acceptable caparing to the mainland. Did some NAV skills and just cruised along to see the usual landmarks. Highlight: Being bitten by the same Garibaldi...4-5 times.

Did two dives yest. off my steel 100 tank. Vis wasn't good, but the fish didn't know that, and they were all out. It was a beautiful day, really calm on the surface, but there was a strong surge at depth, that got stronger as I went deeper, due to the south swell. tide was quite high.

At El Matador, the fish were out in full force. I descended into a school of tiny 1-inch free swimming shrimp, that was very cool. THe little guys were darting around my head. I found a new species of fan worm, that was exciting. The large male sheepheads were like puppy dogs, practically letting me pet them, killing these guys is pathetic. They came right up to my camera. Lots of small dorid nudibranchs were feeding on the sponges. Water on the surface was warm, but it got cool fast. A couple feisty sheep crabs attacked my dive light.

Vis was even worse at Malibu road, everything was stirred up and there were pieces of kelp, algae, and other crap suspended in the water. Horn sharks were out like mad, I saw 12-14 of them in various shapes and sizes. I also saw lots of smaller lobsters too, often in packs of 6-8. A black-n-yellow rockfish planted itself in front of me and had absolutely no fear, letting me position myself within inches of him for a little while. I also saw a couple more feisty sheep crabs.
