The book is based on the true story of the finding and identifying of the U-Who and John Chatterton. Heard John's talk at Shipwrecks Symposium a couple of years ago and it was great. This is the same Wreck that Bernie Chudhury baased his book on about the death of the father and son dive team. Should be a good read.

You can find a write up on John and the sub at http://www.vaxxine.com/nda/shipwrecks/sw99/jc.htm

I thought the part about east coast dive gangs and underwater knife fights over tea cups was pretty rich. I wonder if my gear colours make me a crip or a blood..?

Actually the CBC had a short story on the news about the sub.. Its a German sub found in Canadian waters.. The "Sea Hunters" where shooting video..
The sub was supposed to lay mines in Bostn harbour but when they spotted a merchant convoy they decided to take a shot.. that gave up their position and they were sunk with depth charges by a Canadian escort.
I suspect there will a feature on "The Sea Hunters" about it sooner or later..

The National Post had a story this week about a
newly discovered German Sub found off he coast of Nova Scotia

Hey Spark, Advtech is right. Nagle has long since died, so it can't be the new find. It's the U869.

I did see Kohler diving this new one though. Damn, why didn't he call me?

300ft.......damn.

The book is Shadow Divers - ghost written by Robert Kurson - ISBN 0-375-50858-9 published by Random House. An awesome read for any diver, but especially those who love deep, cold water wreck diving. The story is indeed of the long battle through the early and mid 1990s to identify a mystery Mk IX U-Boat eventually proved to be U-869. A Nova documentary 'Hitler's Lost Sub' featured the story a couple of years ago, but this is the full (335 page) account of the very human story of two divers' crusade to give an identity to the wartime wreck. Highly recommended.
