Destination

Kumomi lies in the south west coast of the Izu pennisula. A steep sided valley meets the sea to form a sheltered cove surrounded by mountains on three sides. A small fishing village nestles around the sandy beach that lines the cove. In the middle of the mouth of the cove, about 500m offshore lie Ushi-tsuki-iwa, a pair of large rocks that rise dramatically out of the waters of the bay. On a clear day you can wach the sun rise from the beach to illuminate the cone of mount Fuji rising behind the rocks, framed by the sides of the bay.

The Diving

Beneath the cleft between the two rocks of Ushi-tsuki-iwa lie a play ground of jumbled rocks that form safely diveable caves and swim throughs. The sheltered environment these rocks provide make a home for a huge diversity of marine life, including Groupers, Lobsters, Shrimp, Nudibranchs, Parrot Fish, Rays and a wide variety of fish usually only found much further south on the coral reefs of Okinawa and the Philippines.

Accomodation

Accomodation for this trip is Minshuku style, where typically you will sleep on tatami mats in a large room with the other divers on the tour. Men and women will be in separate rooms. Meals will be Japanse style cooking, with a strong bias towards seafood.

Koura is located on the south west coast of the Izu pennisula, one of the farthest south dive locations on the west side. Steep rugged rock mountains covered with greenery form the backdrop for the huge bay which hosts a large fleet of fishing boats. Rarely crowded, this feels like our own private location.

Diving

Koura offers some of the most incredible and varied scuba diving on the Izu coast. Ranging from the calm waters of diving inside the bay such as on the fringing fingers of the mountain to the powerful ripping currents of sites such as Oki no Ne and Takenoko, this location has something for every diver. Big fish, macro life, schools of small fishes, each dive is a new adventure. Dive sites are determined by the divers ability, and different groups go to different sites. Expert level dive sites such as Oki no Ne and Takenoko require Advanced Open Water certification or 100+ dives in similar conditions.

Accomodation

Accomodation for this trip is Japanese minshuku style, futon bedding on tatami mats in a common room with the other divers on the tour. Men and women will be in separate rooms. Meals will be Japanse style cooking, usually seafood from the local catch.
