I just got this light. When I shine it against a wall the beam pattern is not round but looks more like a 5-pronged star. Is this normal?

yes its normal, its the shape of the LEDs, when in water you cant see the "star". All good, its a great light

Yes, looking like a star pattern is normal that is just how the optics and the LEDs line up the to the make the light beam. You will not see this in the water.
