Standardization is one of the things that attracted me to DIR. Before I went DIR, I often suffered from gear envy, succumbed to what I now recognize as marketing hype, and fretted over D-rings, octo holders, retractors, and other such gadgets. I actually found it a little stressful. Since switching to DIR, I enjoy peace of mind that my gear is just what it needs to be for the kind of diving I do at present. I don't have any interest in rebreathers or sidemount. People like the OP seem to enjoy probing the standardization--that's good, because somebody has to do it for the system to continue to thrive over time--but there are surely others like me who just want to be given one thoroughly vetted way of doing things.
