Calumet Dive Rescue posted the following today regarding the rescue of a submerged victim after forty minutes underwater.

On this day, fifteen years ago...

At around 11:30am on February 14th, 2009, Dan Kleinhans, his daughter Savannah, and her friend Tiffany were traveling on Lake Winnebago to visit family and friends on opening day of sturgeon spearing. Their truck broke through a snow-covered crack and the vehicle sank killing both Savannah and her father Dan. Tiffany was pulled from the truck, after being submerged more than forty minutes, and survived the incident. It took the nearest underwater ice rescue team over thirty minutes to get there after initial dispatch. These are the events that led up to the birth of the Calumet County Dive Team.
The mother of Savannah, Tina, started Savannah's Pay it Forward Foundation in memory of her daughter. This organization has given our team over $100,000 in necessary funding to create the Calumet County Dive Team that protects all of Calumet County and can be called upon at any time through MABAS. Today, and everyday, we remember Savannah and her dad Dan.

The ice is NEVER 100% safe!

Another reason why it’s imperative to have proper ice diving training for a dive team, the lack of ice should never be substituted with boards or plywood, why DRI allows this is beyond me.
