Well... took too long of a nap today and can't sleep, so I thought I'd get this started.
C-otter and myself flew into Ft. Laud. thurs night around midnight. Got on the road around 12:45, and arrived in Key Largo (actually Tavernier) around 2:15 (no traffic ).
Met Msilvia, Pkatman, Shellbird, and Shellbird's friend (Jim, I think) at the dive shop for a friday afternoon charter. We dove with FKDC (florida keys dive center). The boat was pretty much packed since they were only running one boat. We dove 2 shallow reefs: Hens & Chickens and then Pete's reefs. Nice dives. Will post pics on my site Thursday.
Saturday morning found us all meeting at 8am to dive the Speigel Grove. Wreckwriter drove down from Ft. Laud. to join us. (Tom: was really good to meet you... have to do it again!). We dove with DiversCity . Excellent shop and charter. Bob and Barbara were very knowledgable and helpful. I would not hesitate to recommend them. We dove 2 tanks on the SG. This ship is HUGE. We saw about 1/2 on each tank, but just a general overview... it would take many dives to see it all. Zero current on the wreck. Vis was around 40ft. Again.... I'll post pics on thurs. (I did put 2 or so in the uw photo forum for now).
Oh yea... had a dolphin alongside the boat for a minute or so on the way out.
Had lunch at the resort next to the shop. (Well... some of us did... Trish and Matt had supper ) We bid farewell to wreckwriter and we headed back to FKDC for a night dive.
Had a great night dive at ..... Davis reef, I think. Saw an 8ft nurse shark. Saw a moray, brittle stars, lobsters, a LARGE crab.
Parted with the rest of the lobstah divahs... the night dive was their last of the trip.
Lisa and I dove the Duane on sunday. Very nice wreck. Intact, upright, tons of fish. Saw a jewfish, barracuda and rays along with a variety of other fish. I would rate the Duane as a must dive. We had no current, but I guess it can get pretty good. Vis was 80ft or so. I think we are going back there tuesday with Divers City... but not positive. I hope so! 2nd tank was on a shallow reef. Saw a 3ft. nurse shark. Lisa spotted a small turtle.
I'll cover monday and tuesday's dives in my next update... probably on thursday. Should have all the pics posted on my website sometime thurday.
The rest of the gang can fill in when they get back monday.
