I'm going to be in the area on Saturday and am trying to figure out how to get a couple dives in.

I've done a lot of Caribbean diving and some here in New England where it's cold and the vis is only 10-20 feet. But I've never been in kelp forests.

I don't mind paying for a boat if it will get me better dives. Or will I see plenty from shore dives?

Anyone interested in buddying and showing me around?

Try the Manta Ray Dive shop http://www.mantaraydive.com
Talk to Ben or Luke, tell em Tanya sent you. If you get there early in the
morning, you can get on a list for people looking for a dive buddy. Also,
Breakwater is right there, where everyone gets certified in Monterey. You
might find someone to dive with you there.
I'd volunteer, but I'll be out of town this weekend.

Be sure to rent a 7mm wet suit if you're not wearing a dry suit or have only
a tropical suit. If it's your first time to Monterey, the Breakwater is good,
Lover's Point, and McAbee. Also, Manta Ray does bookings for the Escapade,
and MBDC (Monterey Bay Dive Center http://www.montereyscubadiving.com/ ) also does bookings for the Silver Prince. Both are nice boats. Check the web sites
or call the shops for availability.

You can see plenty from the shore dives, but you may have to swim out a bit.

Good luck and enjoy your visit here :D

Hi Mark,

Tazfrau offers some good advice! Another well-respected dive shop in Monterey is Monterey Bay Dive Center (http://www.montereyscubadiving.com/), and you'll have the pleasure of meeting Trish, Mark, Bill, Dawn, et al.

Over the last couple of weeks, conditions have not been at their best; however, as you know, conditions change.

I encourage you to try either of the dive shops -- they'll guide you in a good direction.

Safe diving, Jeff

PS: I'll be out-of-town, too. Sorry. (With a minimal amount of luck, you'll be able to find a dive buddy at either shop.)
