Since I primarily deal only with Sherwood and Dacor, I do not have much call to repair SP products and I thought I could solicit some advice from this forum. I recently did an overhaul on a MK10 which checked out fine when tested before shipping. The problem is, the man now claims there are "several parts missing", the washers between the body and piston [which I thought were added/subtracted to adjust IP} and the "sleeve" that cover the piston stem. Now since this seals with an o-ring against the stem, I do not see this as possible and I do not see the part in the schematic.
I am the first to admit that I can make mistakes even when dealing with a first stage that I have worked on hundreds of times [Dacor of course] but there is always room for improvement and any input from a SP specialist is appreciated. Regards as always Scott

Was it a MK10 Plus?

The washers do exactly as you say, but if two or more are needed I usually sandwich the spring with them.
The sleeve on the piston is only found on the MK10 +.
The Plus can be recognized by a satin chrome seat retainer, dull piston end and half hollow seat with an o ring around the waist (like the MK20/25).

Not a SP expert by any means but my first thought was "why does he have it apart in the first place" ? If you serviced it, then he doesn't do his own service so why would he be dissambling and inspecting the reg.. Good luck on this one, sounds like you have a pain on your hands.

There's a plastic bushing that fits on some of the pistons but none of my MK10s have them. Did you take one off the piston when servicing the reg and not re-install it? Assuming not, can't you simply tell your customer that there was no bushing on the piston when he brought it in? Another issue is that the ambient side of the piston head is a prime target for corrosion, and a bushing there would only serve to trap water against the piston. My MK15 has one, I think it's part of the TIS anti-freeze system.

You're correct about the plastic washers, they are IP adjusting shims. All of my MK10s need them to get IP within spec, though. If his had some and you removed them, is the IP still in acceptable range? I.E. 130-135 PSI or so?

I sold it through Ebay and then the guy took it to France. Claimed high IP, slow recovery, creep, corrosion on piston, scratch on seat scratched chrome etc. While I always guarantee everything I sell, and mistakes can happen, there are just too many issues with this one and I do not feel like paying shipping from another country so someone can possibly harvest parts at my expense. I would be willing to refund his money if I could be sure that the reg I receive is the one I sent. Some times there is no good solution but I do appreciate the response Thanks Scott

At first when I read this I thought the guy was confusing a MK-10 with a MK-10+. However if the guy is experienced enough to disassemble a regulator and follow a parts diagram he should know the the difference between a MK-10 and a MK-10+. I think he is trying to pull something. If you did a full overall on the regulator and tested it before shipment then you know the person's claims are false. My advice is to be nice and email him the parts diagram of both regulators and explain the difference in the parts. If you did not send it to France then you do not have an obligation to pay for return shipment from France. You could refund his money upon receipt of the regulator plus $10 for shipping which is what domestic shipping would be on a first stage. However, being the person disclosed that he disassembled it I would not take it back. The high IP creep and slow recovery (if accurate) can be diagnosed without dis-assembly, he should have asked for a return at that time.

High IP and missing washers are a contradiction. If both exist, then there is something more serious wrong, like a defective spring.

Tough one this, and Scubapro doesn't make it easier.

Let's assume that the schematic "Conf. 11" dated 02/01 is used; this one is for BOTH the MK10 and the MK10Plus, the MK10Plus specific parts are marked with an *:
  • There's actually a washer, item #34, part #10500118, NOT marked with an *. The MK10Plus manual written by Wolfinger calls it "Spring centering washer"
  • And there's a sleeve, item #19, part #10700401, NOT marked with an *. This part helps a bit in cold water.
So according to this schematic, both the MK10 and the MK10Plus should have these parts. However, in my reality, I've ALWAYS seen them in a MK10Plus, but NEVER in a MK10. My conclusion is MAYBE the very latest MK10 have those parts, but not any of the earlier production.

Now regarding the creep, and assuming both parties are in good faith, the only explanation I can see is the customer disturbed the orientation of the seat when he took it apart.

Now, was there any creep when you tested it? Did you replace the seat?

I sold it through Ebay and then the guy took it to France. Claimed high IP, slow recovery, creep, corrosion on piston, scratch on seat scratched chrome etc.

If he took it apart and put it back together with the same seat, he might have caused some creep. The piston never seems to line up exactly with the seat once it's engraved in a specific spot, so you end up with two overlapping grooves in the seat.

So you sold it in the states, then the guy transported it to France, then he started complaining? Hmmm....seems he should have complained immediately when he got it, or was that not possible?

That said, I once bought a MK5 on ebay that looked PERFECT in the photo, when it arrived it was clearly a different MK5, heavily worn. It took some doing but eventually I got my money back, including shipping in both directions. Ebay's a funny place, most of the time everything works out great but occasionally you run into some problems. Hope you get this one solved!

If you are going to get into an ebay tiff over this, do it ON ebay messages not on personal emails. ebay can look at the entire exchange and it helps you if there is a clear he said/ she said trail they can follow. I had a similar problem with a guy who totally ignored the text of my listing (as is- don't know if it works or not), claimed a lot of BS and demanded a full refund all of his money including shipping , I was to pay the return shipping (which if you read ebay policy is HIS responibility) and all of this before he would return the item. Even though it was listed as-is, I offered him his money back minus shipping (as is ebay policy) but he would not hear of it. I finally had to take it to ebay who took my side, mainly due to the (ebay) emails we had exhcanged
