Good morning...

Found out my wife might be transferred to Newark in Aug. for a 6-9 month stint and was curious what diving opportunities abound? Only be visiting on weekends so any charters you might recommend? any quarries or shore diving, heck I'm easy...it could even be a pond?

Thanks a lot...

Don

Once you start diving regularly in the ocean it's hard to go back to the quarry :confined:

Diversauras,
"Once you start diving regularly in the ocean it's hard to go back to the quarry"

Agreed :D... unfortunately, I'm closer to the quarry (the infamous Gilboa Quarry) on weekends than the ocean when I'm not travelling. Been trying to get the wife to sign off on moving but that's not gonna happen. The only hope I have is she leaves me...and that's not going to happen either:D . Actually carry the gear with me everywhere I/we go, just typically don't go to Newark. Thus my question of who is recommend hangin' out with since it will be new stompin grounds for me.

Best Regards

Don

If you are coming to Jersey and you are looking for shore dives in the ocean I recomend you go south a little from newark and hit the coast at Longbranch. Anywhere from Longbranch south along the coast to Manasquan you can find some nice dives. Even a bunch of wrecks if you know exactly where to look.

Plenty of Charter boats and 6 packs leave out of the Jersey shore also. The most notable and easy to find boat is the Diversion II. You can get alot more information here...

As far as quarry goes Dutch Springs just over the boarder into PA (about 50 minutes from Newark Airport) is THE local diving quarry. Almost ALL NY/NJ/PA check out dives are done here. Lots of underwater sites planted.

Feel free to drop me a line also if you know you're going to be in the area and maye we'll get together and hit a few spots.

Thanks for the info... I'll know more next month and will make contact with you as I have a better idea of how things will be coming together..

Hi there, I live in the Phila. area, and work part time at a dive shop there. If you are into wreck diving, then NJ/NY/PA is the place to be. As mentioned Dutch Springs quarry is nice, lots of neat things to look at, and a great way to get a fresh water rinse on your gear after doing some Jersey diving.

As for Jersey diving, numerous wrecks, with numerous boats to choose from. You have the Seeker, the Diversion II, Bottom Times....etc. The shore diving is fun, but sometimes the vis. is not so good b/c of how close to shore it is. Once you know more of when you'll be up, drop me a line, I can let you know if our shop is running a trip on a boat.......dive on!

HI dcostanza,

I live in Hoboken which is just South of the Lincoln Tunnel enterance and about 10-55 minutes from Newark (depending on trafic... ).

There is a diveshop in Hoboken you can contact for local dive info.

I've been in there a few times to buy small items and stuff but I've never been diving with them.

I normaly go down and dive with a friend who lives by Seaside Hights (about 1.3 hours south). It's convenient for me because he lets me keep my gear down there.

3 new PADI Specialties specifically for diving in Newark:

1) Underwater Meth Lab Specialist
2) Submerged Stolen Car Recovery Specialist
3) Underwater Navigation using bodies from Mob hits as landmarks.

Fine print: No people, it's a joke. These are NOT real specialties.

Oh, Fun-NEE. :)

There's a ton of excellent diving in NJ. You're coming to the right place! :D

Speaking of this area, does anyone ever dive the NYC waterways? I can only imagine the viz, but I have heard unconfirmed rumors that NY Harbor is home to the seedstock of several species of abundant ocean fish. Besides, I'd think it would be really interesting to look at the old seawalls and bridge abutments that probably abound there.

Good question.
I've thought about it myself.
I imagine diving in the Hudson, from Battery Park to Midtown, wouldnt be a good idea.
There is way too much boat/ferry traffic since 9/11.
Although they finally reopened the PATH train from Jersey City to WTC yesterday.
Maybe that will reduce the number of commuter ferries, many of which are converted fishing boats.
Maybe good around the brooklyn bridge.
Should be good around the Statue of Liberty and Govenors Island.
