Martin and Justine:

We would love to host you here in Fort Lauderdale. PM (private message) us details of what you would like to do and we will do our best to set up a trip that shows you all South Florida has to offer!

Very great information from everyone... ScubaBoard seems like a pretty happy "family". I think we are going to take it slow on our first trip (still have no dates planned), before considering getting farther away (Bahamas, Caribbean). Fortunately, being retired means we have plenty of time to plan.

Cheers everyone

You have some good advice. I would be one to suggest USVI over the Keys for reef and marine life opportunities.

However if passports are available consider Bonaire. Great, even fantastic, starter dive trip location. Shore dives, boat dives, great reef at easy depth, rarely a current or surf and waves. Very laid back. Likely less costly than the Caymans and perhaps less costly than USVI. It is a divers' island and little else to do if not a diver. Sun worshipping is great but it is not much on beaches like in Florida.
