hi all im thinking of doing my nitrox course and ive heard stories from difrent people from diffrent training groups and i was hopeing for your input on who you were nitrox trained with and to what % you were trained to does anyone do a 100 % ?

i am 100% nitrox eliterate please help :)

Basic Nitrox certification'll involve training for Nitrox blends up to 40% O2. There isn't much call for anything above 40% for general diving, and the higher percent mixes are used for more efficent offgassing during decompression stop diving. The training for mixes up to 100% O2 comes in a more advanced course, and is often tought in conjection with a decompression procedures course.

If you want anything higher than 40%, then you will need to undergo advanced training.

Higher oxygen levels are not necessarily better. As you will learn, your depth becomes severely limited when you substantially increase the oxygen content of your breathing mix. The maximum depth for 100% oxygen is a mere 13 to 19 feet (approx 4 to 6 meters).

Diving a mix below its prescribed MOD (maximum operating depth) may put you at substantial risk of convulsions and death by drowning.

The most standard mixes are 32% and 36% (i.e. 68% and 64% nitrogene, respectively). As noted above, more O2 means less depth. My instructor always uses a 40% mix. Some LDS will fill your tank according to the % you want, some others will only offer 32 and/or 36%. Also, here in SoCal, there are 2 liveaboards offering Nitrox refills. Both at 32%. Most boats will only have air refills.

Do a search on the board. There's plenty about Nitrox.

Assuming you're a rec diver, get the certification from your preferred agency. It's well worth it. You don't get trained for a specific %. You'll be trained for up to 40%. There are standard tables for 32 and 36%. For anything else, you'll need a calculator and/or a Nitrox compatible computer (highly recommended, unless, like some here, you can't stand computers).

I really enjoyed the Nitrox certification. It felt like going back to school. Lots of very basic math. It's all about numbers and gas chemistry.

Go take the class, its a lot of fun and will expand your possibilities when diving
