HOAX It is an opinion piece and worded to scare people. Much of it is driven by the commercial fisherman who are going to loose much of their fisheries in the next year, due to over fishing.

There are lots of bans and restrictions coming about. The main one that prompted the article is the ban on Blue Fin Tuna.
Obama Fishing Ban:To Ban Sport Fishing?

Obama Fishing Ban:To Ban Sport Fishing? – Obama fishing ban hoax is spreading like wild fire on the internet.Earlier today few media outlets including ESPN decided to report a false story that claimed Obama was planing to ban fishing as a sport. The truth of the matter is that the administration has decided to back a worldwide ban on fishing or trade in Bluefin Tuna in hope to preserve the stocks that remain. The New York Times has more on the story:

“There is no doubt that the species is in desperate trouble. Stocks of Atlantic and Mediterranean bluefin declined by more than 70 percent between 1957 and 2007, and by more than 60 percent in the last decade alone. Stocks in the Western Atlantic, including the United States, have stabilized but at a very low level. The decline has been driven by a growing global appetite for tuna, and by the rapid mechanization of industrial fishing, chiefly purse-seining operations that allow for the capture of entire schools of tuna at once.”

Here is one for you Whale War lovers.

"Japan has already said it would ignore a ban and leave its markets open to continued imports — even if the tuna are granted endangered species status."

We need to some serious pressure on Japan to follow the WORLDS RULES!

This is about the Red Snapper ban that is going to take place again being reactive instead of proactive. If we would have slowed fishing down long ago we wouldn't be in this predicament. BTW notice it does not say all fish in the Atlantic just the Red Snapper.

Here in CA we have the MPA's coming into effect April 1st. Long term the MPA's have been shown to benefit fisherman. http://www.dfg.ca.gov/mlpa/pdfs/nccm...re_highres.pdf

The video below will give you an idea of just how much Ying and Yang is true.

Just shows you what some people will believe. No wonder they don't understand Obama, they're too stupid. This was published by ESPN... makes me question their sports stats and even the reported scores of games that are over!

ESPN even pulled their link! So even they don't support what they said anymore.

BTW notice that the suggestion is to close all bottom fishing to protect the red snapper. Hence a fishing ban.

I never read that, but might have missed it. Where is the quote?

http://www.safmc.net/Portals/6/Library/FMP/SnapGroup/RedSnapperFAQ09.pdf

"The bulk of red snapper landings are from the recreational fishery, with recreational landings exceeding commercial landings by 2-3 fold over the assessment period. Between 2000 and 2006, the recreational sector accounted for about 72% of total red snapper landings."

"The discard mortality rate, or the number of fish that die even when they are released, is estimated at 40% for the recreational fishery and 90% for the commercial fishery"

"Red snapper live to 54 years of age, but in 2007 less than one percent of the population was estimated as being age 10 or older."

Some interesting stuff there, and it just shows how much we have devastated the Red Snapper.

Many fisherman are up in arms over this ban. They believe ESPN more then Mr.Obama.

OBAMA FISHING BAN is typical disinformation being propagated these days, it's an inflamatory way to say that NOAA Nat'l marine fisheries is doing what it was mandated to do, preserve fish stocks. There have been successful closures for snook and chesapeake bay rockfish, (striped bass). These species have recovered enough to allow a fishing season on both. There is currently a snapper and grouper partial closure. This is NOT an OBAMA FISHING BAN it is a fisheries management tool used by NOAA and state fish & game depts.

We don't want to see grouper and snapper go the way of the FL conch. They put a closure on the conch fishery too late and it still hasn't recovered. They used to be everywhere.

We took too many fish over the last several decades, it's time to let the stock reproduce back to a healthy population while we still can.

Our President thinks it knows better than the fish do. More big government
He thinks government programs will work better than mother nature.

At this rate we will not have any freedom left.

Capitalism made this country great, socialism will bring it down.

Even ESPN does not believe it's own BS. Try the link-oops it's gone.

Fisherman have never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

The Council is considering an area closure in Amendment 17A to the Snapper Grouper Fishery Management Plan that would prohibit the harvest of all snapper grouper species
It's from the safmc web site, so very unlikely that its a hoax

News Release March 8, 2010

Good news is below
The Council kept a preferred management alternative to allow spearfishing within the closed area, excluding red snapper, because there is no bycatch associated with the use of the gear.
Probably due to the very outspoken spearos at the meeting, and the inability of the law enforcement advisory panel to prove that spearfishing should be banned. Their reasoning was that it would be to hard to distinguish a fish harvested by a spear from other gear. (the big gaping spear hole might be a giveaway)

Unfortunately this quote drives home the fact that other gear is not allowed.

There is more on this, just have to look.

Edit: more quotes.
What are long-term red snapper regulations likely to include?
• Amendment 17A contains management alternatives for large time and area closures that would prohibit fishing for all species in the snapper-grouper management complex (there are 73) in areas where red snapper are most abundant.

Why are large area closures being considered?
• Large multispecies closures are being considered to because bycatch mortality of red snapper is very high and they are often caught and discarded while fishing for other snapper-grouper species. Prohibiting harvest of red snapper alone will not be enough to end overfishing of the species.

It's on the NOAA site, So I really doubt its a hoax
