Greatest luck of that sort I ever read of actually ON a personal dive trip was four or five years ago. A high school biology teacher in Florida was collecting snails for class dissection, and inside one found a 56 carat emerald. He was diving at a known location of a sunken Spanish galleon, but it was assumed to have been stripped clean decades ago.
 
Hey, I found a mask and two snorkels last weekend. It's a start!
 
I would just like to dive with a salvage operation (preferably in warm, clear, shallow water :D ) to have the experience of unearthing something and bringing it up. The search experience and techniques would just be fun.
