There's a current plan underway for expanding my dive training into tech diving :cool2:, it's clear that I will likely be purchasing additional regulators in addition to what I own (for recreational diving).

I own a Mares proton metal second stage, paired with a V16 first stage, which I absolutely enjoy diving with and Mares seems to have the most talented designers in the SCUBA world designing the aesthetics of their products.

My question for Mares experts is, what is the performance difference between the proton metal second stage and the Abyss second stage? I briefly compared the Abyss and proton metal, for size, the Abyss is very noticeably bigger, and the design is less "streamlined". If there is actual test data to compare the two models, that would be so much the better.

I do know that the deepest dive on SCUBA was done using the Abyss, by Mark Ellyat (?)

But, unfortunately I have not dived with the Abyss to know its breathing performance.

If the performance is the same between the Abyss and the proton metal, I would choose the proton metal for its smaller size and "streamline"; but performance can tip the favor for the Abyss.

Thank you so much for the help in making the choice!
