The attached GoFundMe link will give you the details but in short; a local tribe, the Makah, want to take up hunting grey whales. We hope to raise funds to send at least two decision makers from the Makah to Mexico, San Ignacio Lagoon to see another side of the whales and possible eco-tourism options. Rather than just say "don't do that" maybe we can add a new element to a difficult subject. We hope you will review the link. As important as raising the funds is sharing the link is monumental also. Thank you for your valuable time.

Do you also petition to stop the Puyallup Tribe from gill netting across the river from sand to surface? 1 or 2 whales pale in comparison to #s pulled in via net. Save the salmon. At least the whale gets used within the tribe and not just sold commercially.

Clearly management of all fisheries is crucial. Salmon are closely monitored by many groups. We simply felt there maybe an opportunity to contribute to the subject of harvesting the grey whales than just sitting back in the cheap seats taking cheap shots.

Four to five whales a year?

Given all the **** that has been heaped on the NW tribes, isn't there a better avenue for your "passion"

It is a difficult subject. I actually went out to Neah Bay and had the opportunity to speak with a couple of Makah managers involved with this issue. Everyone I met were kind and gracious. It was clear how deeply they feel about this subject. If the money is raised and they decline to go so be it. If they take on the trip, return and decide to remain on their current path it shows they are giving all perspectives consideration.

"For the Makah Tribe, whale hunting provides a purpose and a discipline which benefits their entire community. It is so important to the Makah, that in 1855 when the Makah ceded thousands of acres of land to the government of the United States, they explicitly reserved their right to whale within the Treaty of Neah Bay."

Makah Tribe Whale Hunt Info.

The Makah returned to hunting whales in the traditional manner in 1999, unfortunately they took the video down, probably because of bad press, as old school hunting is a messy business.

The most recent estimate of the Gray Whale population in winter 2022/2023 is 14,526. (NOAA Fisheries)

But killing whales is icky...

They're following tradition and using mostly traditional means. Technology comes into affect after the harvest to ensure the whale isn't lost. They then use the whole damn animal. I'm way more ok with this than the rivers being draped in gill nets from sea to spawn.
