Up and Down are really Terminate dive and Begin dive.

Actually, they mean "ascend" and "descend." They are words that are used in sentences. They are not sentences all by themselves. A thumb pointing up is part of a message to terminate a dive, but by itself does not necessarily mean the dive is over. It may be part of a sentence that says, "Ascend to 50 feet, we are too deep." The misconception that a thumb pointing up ends a dive has come about in recent years because of the expression "thumb a dive."
