The San Diego Oceans Foundation (SDOF), The San Diego Chapter of the Marine Technology Society, and the Diving Equipment and Marketing Association (DEMA) will hold a meeting on March 11 at 7:00 p.m. at Sumner Hall, Scripps Institute of Oceanography to talk about the Ships 2 Reefs program. Since the ex-HMCS Yukon was sunk off San Diego as an artificial reef in 2000, it has become the model for the U.S. Government's approach to dispose of some 400 obsolete warships as mandated by Congress. SDOF's goal is to form a regional coalition in order to work with state and local governments and civic groups to bring some of these ships to California. For more information on SDOF and the Ships 2 Reefs program, visit www.sdoceans.org and www.ships2reefs.com. The purpose of the meeting is to inform and involve interested stakeholders in the process of creating more artificial reefs.
