Why did I buy tanks? I was tired of needing to be at my LDS the day BEFORE (or going on the way if on a weekend) and needing to get my tanks, then having to turn around and either drop them off on my way home, or the very next day...AND if I rented, went to the site and decided that I wasn't going to or able to dive on that day, then needing to return the FULL tank and eating either the rental fee or the whole thing (sometimes they would just credit me for the fill)...
Now I get them filled whenever, and they are ready to go at a moments notice, if I can't get there the night before or the night after, no biggie..if I get to the dive site, and conditions are sucky, or if I don't feel right, I still have a full tank for the next time....
To sum up...convenience...not price!
