US$10 for a carabiner is pretty steep, especially when it's an "accessory" 'biner (i.e. not for climbing / not load-bearing). CA$6 will get a basic locking 'biner, and the non-locking ones are even cheaper. For CA$20 (~US$15) you can get a top-quality Petzl auto-locker.jeremygreen:a carribeaner makes a pretty good tank banger. You can also use it to attach stuff to your BC if you need to.
Leisurepro sells some pretty cheap ones (less than $10).

Ever heard of fishing line? Entanglement is a hazard on EVERY dive unless you're in a swimming pool and there's no lane markers. Spool line, reel line, kelp, fishing line, other divers dangly crap - they're all playthings for Mr Murphy.armyscuba:Too funny everyone's point on catching them on things..seems like You all dive alot of chain link fence? Wreck Penetration..Yeah..well..You should not be in a wreck if You have that type of trouble with Your equipment or more important,,,,Your Buoyancy. I saw one post that stated another diver might catch onto it..."That's a Joke Right"?
