Thank you ALL for your correction, and confirmation. I just wanted to be certain about the FACTS, as I have heard my Instructor colleagues give briefings which are obviously inaccurate. I agree with Zippsy that most divers do appreciate a good "story", but IMHO when you are talking about history it is important to give CORRECT information--even if it isn't as "exciting" as the urban legend!

You should hear some of the stories I overhear at the Casino Point Dive Park... about the history of "my" island and about the critters in the dive park.

Re-reading my post, I realize that I was openning myself to mis-interpretation. I was not really advocating the continuation of the urban legend. FYI, I'm not sure I really believe the one about Jacques Cousteau naming Richelieu Rock after the the Three Musketeers character, Cardinal Richelieu, either.
 
Hahaha. Richelieu Rock was given its English name in honor of a Danish national (and descendant of a French aristocratic family) who became an Admiral in the Royal Thai Navy. His name was Andreas du Plessis de Richelieu. Look him up!
