The rough pads they sell for non-stick cookware work pretty well, I keep a small piece in my stuff. Toothpaste on the pad works even better.
 
Best and easiest method was used pink eraser. Drilled 1/8 hold through top, tied rubber band through it and mounted to slate.
 
On "traditional" slates, I use the magic eraser... But I got me one of those magna-doodle style slates, which rock! Just slide the lever up and down, and you're good to go... Works great when leading a dive and you want to tell people what they are seeing...

I prefer Aquafresh over crest!!

Seriously, soft scrub works fine and so does a other commercial products with mild abrasives in them.
 
I covered mine with layers of white med tape, works like the tear offs for goggles. Is inconvenient for long winded conversations but that's what wet notes are for.
