hi,
I was diving with two friends yesterday on the metridium fields at breakwater.
After keep going Est and passing several metridium field, by 60ft/65ft we say a "field" of some kind of squid eggs, but I am not sure about what it is exactly.
Each eggs was about 5 inches, and all together they creating that kind of structures

thanks,
it is the first i see that!

btw
I just answer to your pm about the lead.

Market squid eggs. Development of the eggs is dependent on water temperature so without that information one can only guess. Based on research for one of my columns on market squid, I wrote "It may take 15 to 90 days for the eggs to hatch depending on the water temperature (61 to 46 degrees for that time range)."

See my "Dive Dry with Dr. Bill" newspaper columns on market squid:

Thanks Dr. Bill, great info and a fun read! I appreciate your knowledge. Good to meet you at Casino point last month. Take care!

Dove Saturday and saw another huge field off of the Breakwater wall. We dropped down at #10, proceeded Northeast for about 10 minutes before coming across the largest field of squid eggs I'd ever seen. Amazing # of nettles cruising over the top. This was maybe 10' off the wall in the sand. Some folks at Aquarius Del Monte were also talking about the large field out at Metridium. Quite a sight to behold.

Did you take that photo at breakwater?

The eggs were laid the weekend of July 21st. Given temperatures, the earliest estimate of hatching should be this weekend.

I think this weekend is way early. Looking over my dive log, Shale Island (about 10-15 feet shallower, so a touch warmer) has been 48-50F of late. Dr. Bill: what's the prognosis for those temps? Everybody: I've never seen a picture of a hatching squid. Go for it.

And a final note: those are clusters of squid eggs, not each finger is a squid.
