Does anyone have any tips for creating the best possible copies of these pictures? I ended up resizing the shot from 2288x1712 to 480x360, but the detail suffered a little bit. I shot the pic as a SHQ JPEG...

Try photoshop elements. Its a lot cheaper than full blown photoshop. You can use photoshop to convert images to all kinds of formats and you can also convert them for use on the web. It allows you to resize and change the quality of the image so that it will be fast loading. Its a pretty amazing program.
