On the 2nd of March 1941 the steamer Castlehill was en route from Cork to Newport when she ran foul of a German Heinkel bomber He 111. The bomber had over run its target on the south English coast and was low on fuel and needed to dump its bombs in order to return home so they dumped them on the Castlehill sending her to the bottom killing 8 of her crew with just 1 survivor. When we dived a fishermans fastener 9 miles of Dunabrattin Head in 57m we had no idea we were going to find the Castlehill, but when searching the wreck I came on the ships bell. Years later I met Will Alexander great grandson of 2nd Engineer Charles Knox Henry Black lost on the Castlehill. Photo presenting the bell to Will.
