Hi Guys

Can anyone give me some tips on accommodation for Sipidan diving (hope this hasn't been asked a million times before and apologies if it has!)

Is it necessary to stay on one of the resorts at Mabul or Kapilai or can you stay at the Dragon Inn at Semporna and take trips to Sipidan from there and is this cheaper and as convenient as staying on the islands. also has anyone stayed at the oil rig-cum-backpackers at mabul? seems like this is the cheapest option on the islands.

We were leaning towards the Kapilai resort but with the Aussie dollar, is quite expensive. we will be in Sabah early June so can anyone comment on the dive conditions at Sipidan and how busy the area might be.

Thanks heaps
:blinking:

Hi Rainshine

Yes the Seaventures Platform is the chepest alternative if you want to stay near the dive sites. There is soemthing quite novel about staying on a converted oil rig and the dive beneath it is very good.

If the other resorts are beyond your budget you shoul look at the Platform. The alternative is a long period of time psent getting to and from Semporna (which is nto a particularly nice place to stay anwyay).

Here are some links you may find useful:

Boat rides from Semporna can be lengthy and rough depending upon dive conditions. I find the platform a bit limited and claustrophic. Yes, the dive under it is nice - once or twice but you can and probably will dive it with any operation.

I've gone diving in Sipadan/Mabul/Seporna area 3 times. The first two times, I stayed at Dragon Inn and boated in... it's about 45 minutes by boat and you are out there all day (on the boat) maybe a quick hour or so on Sipidan Island. Sometimes flat and calm water, sometimes not. If you do this, I would suggest diving with Scuba Junkies. I would recommend though that you spring for the extra bucks and stay on Mabul. Very nice resorts there and good operators. I know the oil rig may be cheaper, but is not the prettiest site on stilts! Sorry to disagree with the above responses, but I didn't think the diving underneath was that great, unless you like tires :~) Sipidan is such a great place to dive, you really want to do it right! Either way, the turtles are amazing and so is the rest of the natural life, and so much of it. Enjoy!

I am just back from Mabul. Reference diving under the platform. It is not all that good. A couple of pgymy sea horses and maybe the old flatworm or nudibranch. It seems that it used to be a much better critter habitat but no longer.

I think both you and lep have nailed it. The dive under the platform is not a pretty dive site. More like diving in a underwater junk yard. However the diversity of creatures there in the junkyard is simple amazing.

There's an option on Mabul where you stay at the longhouse for 50RM/night including food. Cheap and easy and the diving is pretty much standard priced at 300RM/3 dives incl. gear at most operators (additional 40RM for park fee if you're diving Sipadan). The other resorts on Mabul are damn expensive (US$150 and up) and Kapalai is just a couple of houses on stilts built on the reef and not an island. As for living in Semporna, the place is a bit of a shock in itself but accomodation is cheap (dorm from 15RM at scuba junkies, 40RM for private and 66RM for room at dragon inn) If you stay at Mabul or Kapalai you are pretty much limited to Sipadan, Mabul and Kapalai whereas if you are staying in Semporna you can go to the islands to the north as well which have some cool, easy macro diving. But for a short stay of a week or so, I would focus solely on Sipadan, Mabul and Kapalai. Preferably bring your own equipment as the rental equipment is pretty bad.
Must do divesites:

Sipadan - Barracuda Point, Drop off/Turtle Cave, South Point, Hanging Gardens
Mabul - Artificial reef, Froggie's Boulevard
Kapalai - Kapalai Wrecks (watch your deco)

Have fun!

Ok, all these whiles, I have been staying in Semporna and took the boat out to Sipadan or Mabul. Journey took anywhere between 45 mins to 1 hr. The associated cost by staying on the mainland and *rough* it up a bit for the boat trip is outlined below:
- Dragon Inn: RM60-80 per nite
- or Seafest Hotel: RM110 per nite
- or Scuba Junkie non-hostel room: RM60-80 per nite
- meals b'fast, lunch, dinner: RM30 per day
- boat trip with 3 dives on Sipadan: RM360 inc all equipment rental

I don't really have much orientation on pricing for either Kapalai Dive Resort, Sipadan Water Village Resort, SMART Resort or Seaventures Oil Rig.

For next trip in Sep-07, I do intend to stay in Mabul with Uncle Chang backpackers for about RM50 per night stay in some sort of hostel condition. I will need to double check on whether we could rough it out or not.

Anyway, I do have extensive reports on dives and accommodation in my website: http://www.malaysia-islands.com and please do not hesitate to PM me for further queries.

Well, it kinda depends on your budget & which area you are focusing your diving on..
By the way, I just came back from Sipadan heh... and i stayed at a few places so maybe i can give you a better idea of what you should expect...
hopefully you'll benefit from my experience..

First of all, we dived at 3 separate locations- the Mataking/ Boheyan area (further up north, close to border of phillippines in the celebes sea), the Sipadan/ Mabul/ Kapalai area, & lastly the Roach Reef area... we stayed at different locations for each area dived..

When we dived at Mataking & Boheyan, we stayed on Semporna mainland at Dragon Inn. It takes about 45 min boat ride to the dive sites. Dragon Inn itself is not too bad, its built on stilts over the water (which is so polluted that i doubt any fish can survive in it, but no smell though), but more importantly the rooms were clean & big, & fresh water supply all day long.. i had a TV tho' i'm not sure if all the rooms have..so i would rate it a 'value for money'.
Breakfast is provided but be warned it consists of only a cup of tea/coffee & 2 slices of bread. picnic lunches are usually provided by the dive operator which you take onboard with you the boat. Dinner is NOT provided so you have to forage around yourself but there are plenty of restaurants around. Diving there is not as fantastic as i was hoping tho.

After that we moved to the SeaVentures Oil Rig platform to dive sipadan, mabul & kapalai. Honestly, tho they welcome you with a glass of orange juice when you arrive, & they provide you with 4 yummy meals a day as well as free flow coffee/tea/milo... as well as clean towels daily, the rooms were small, windowless, with a funny smell, & i suspect the blankets have serious bed bugs infections..
not recommended for the claustrophobic or cleanliness freak. So think twice about staying here, but then most of your time will be spent diving & the only time you'll b in the room is when you're sleeping.
Also, tho they promise you unlimited reef dives, the current there is so strong that they dun even recommend u dive under the platform itself.
by the way, the fresh water supply on the oil rig is desalinated seawater, but the degree of desalination is questionable. ie you'll still b bathing & brushing your teeth in relatively salty water..
the only good thing about the platform is its proximity to the dive sites, & the relatively cheaper price compared to the resorts on the islands.

the last area we dived was roach reef (a privately owned man-made reef) which was interesting. same price as oil rig but you get resort service, unfortunately it's almost 45min from Sipadan, & another 45min to the mainland. But i don't think you'll be interested in diving this area so i won't go into too much detail abt this part of my trip.

My Recommendations (you can disagree heh)
1. Length of stay- if u will be there only a few days, i suggest you concentrate on diving the sipadan/mabul/kapalai sites. there's a reason y they're one of the best dives in asia. if you're staying longer then you can consider a Dive Safari.

2. If you're diving the S/M/K only, then stay on the islands...
if resorts are way out of your budget, go with Scuba Junkies, they offer backpackers acommodation on Mabul.
If you decide to stay on mainland Semporna, go with North Borneo Dive & Sea Sport, they are one of the largest dive center there, with 4 speedboats & located right in Dragon Inn so it's convenient.

3. Price Range- the prices are very competitive, & it's not necessarily cheaper to walk-in & book a dive only when you arrive there. Also there's the Sipadan permits to consider. Book at least a month ahead. Pls note that you can only dive Sipadan on ALTERNATE DAYS. This is a friendly agreement between the dive operators.

4. Peak periods are during April-Aug so expect higher prices, I went in April & paid US$900 (all inclusive) for 8D/7N with 22 dives. This is not an endorsement of my dive package but a rough guide for you.

There hope these info will help! More importantly, have loads of fun there!

Cheers!
Violet

You don't have to dive Sipadan alternate days, i don't know who made you believe that. I spent time there both as a DM and as a paying customer and never heard of anything like that.

As for the permits... the situation is rediculous, don't worry about them too much, just make sure you book in time to get a spot on the boat.
