I've always found them to be a real hassle, harder to get the BC on, and they get torn up pretty easily (I had them on my tanks for a while), and generally a pain. As soon as I took them off, setup was much easier. Some of the ones that just go around the body and stop at the shoulder of the tank will stretch and roll over in time, which inevitably gets worse the more you dive.
Wouldn't an easier/simpler solution be to just carry the tank/ not drag it on the rocks? Wear the kit in into the water maybe? Seems like what would be bad for the tank would also be bad for your BC and regs.
