Introduction

This post explains the current rules and guidelines of the DIR forum of ScubaBoard. It replaces the previous rules, written by @lamont. Lamont has contributed a great deal to SB over the years, but has not been so active lately.

The DIR forum is open to all ScubaBoard members. In the past, it was an opt-in forum. If you see a post which does not meet the following criteria, please feel free to report the post.

Rules

1. ScubaBoard's entire Terms of Service and Rules (ToS) still applies here
2. No trolling. Topics posted in the DIR forum rather than somewhere else are for discussing how DIR practices apply to those topics, which may differ from how more general diving practices may apply to those topics.
3. Divers unfamiliar with DIR are welcome to ask questions but should not attempt to answer questions posted in the DIR forum. Non-DIR answers to DIR questions is considered trolling in this forum.
4. Please do not bash DIR philosophy, gear, or agencies. Suggesting in the DIR forum that the DIR approach to the topic is the wrong approach is bashing.
5. If you wish to seek non-DIR answers or give non-DIR answers, please use one of the many other forums on this board. Perhaps Advanced Scuba or Technical Diving would be a more suitable forum.
6. DIR topics are not restricted to only this forum. You're welcome to discuss DIR in any forum, but we ask that you don't dwell on non-DIR points within this forum.

Guidelines

Definition of DIR

The operational definition of DIR in this forum is the practices of the WKPP, and the GUE, ISE and UTD training agencies.

NAUI-Tech has similar gear configuration but substantially different procedures. The training offered by GUE/ISE/UTD certified students who then go on to train divers under NAUI/TDI/PADI/etc is not considered DIR.

While this definition is arguable, it should be argued about outside of this forum. (UTDs sidemount and CCR equipment configurations are outside the scope of this definition)

Newbies

Newbies that are interested in DIR are encouraged to post, particularly questions. Generally, if you're posting questions, looking for DIR answers, that is more than welcome! However, please understand that if you receive an answer that is contrary to a practice you believe in strongly, and you persist in arguing against the DIR practice, that will be considered trolling.

Trolling

Please try to moderate yourself. The previous opt-in-to-post policy was meant to prevent posters who didn't notice that they were in the DIR forum from posting non-DIR answers to questions. If you do not dive DIR and don't maintain awareness of which forum you're posting in, then vacations from being able to post to the DIR forum will be enforced. If you want to argue a point with DIR divers based on a thread in the DIR forum, the Technical Diving forum is a great place to start a new thread and argue about DIR.

Attacking the basic tenets of DIR diving in this forum is bad form, much like attacking the buddy system in the the Basic Scuba forum or preaching veganism in BBQ restaurants.

A Friendly Reminder...

Please respect a diver's carefully considered decision to follow DIR practices.
