I am headed to Bangkok with my son Jan 10th and have Livaboard scheduled Jan 14-18 in Phuket. We will fly into BKK the 11th PM and will meet up with a freind coming coming from Pattaya and head to Phuket the next day. I am assuming the BKK - Phuket flights depart/arrive from the same arport the international flights do?

After the liveaboard we want to go back to Pattaya.. Ive heard you can fly from Phuket to Pattaya... is this correct (or safe)?

I was not going to "schedule" any of the local domestic flights untill we get there..

Any help is appreciated

there are flights from BOTH the new and the old airport in BKK to Phuket so it very much depends on which carrier you fly as to whether you will need to change airports for the domestic flight

You want to depart and return to Bangkok from Bangkok International Airport - known as Suvarnabhumi (pronounced Soo-waana-poom).

AirAsia.com is the biggest budget carrier that flies several times a day from Phuket to Suvarnabhumi airport so I suggest you go with them. You can book your tickets online at AirAsia.com

Suvarnabhumi is much closer to Pattaya than the old domestic airport, known as Don Muang.

To get from Phuket to Pattaya, it's easier to fly Phuket to Bangkok and then get a taxi direct from Bangkok Airport to Pattaya - takes around 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic and costs around 1600 Baht.
