Rob,
I just returned from two weeks in Chuuk, one week at TrukStop Hotel and the other onboard the Truk Odyssey. I had a fantastic time at both. Here are my thoughts on diving with the TrukStop.
Bill Stinnett (Owner) has set up everything you need in one place. The accommodations are great, restaurant serves wonderful food, and the dive support is the best. Dive Masters/Instructors Kelvin and Anabel Davidson will take care of your every diving need. They assign you a spacious dive locker when you arrive. Everything is centrally located, lockers, tables, wash tanks, pier..everything. Diving is done from small boats at both TrukStop and Blue Lagoon. TrukStop has a Dive Master with you and a Chuukese boatman, who will take care of your gear and remain on the boat during diving.
During our stay we were a group of three, there was also a large group from Spain. Each group discussed and planned their own dive sites with their Dive Master. Anabel was great at getting us to our sites and supporting our 3 dives per day desires. Very personalized service and support. As mentioned Truk Stop also supports Tec Diving, if you desire. They generally run a 30% NITROX mix and you can get that in single or double AL80's. For deeper wrecks they'll provide whatever you desire.
The advice on non-dive activities from others is right on the mark. Take a day tour of the island if you like but forget about going out at night. Other than TrukStop and Blue Lagoon, there are no places you should be going for entertainment or dining. Drink only the water they put in your room or bottled water. TrukStop places water in your room that's been processed and is safe to drink - don't drink the water from the sink/shower. Walking distance from the TrukStop (across the street and down the road about 100 yards) is a store where you can get just about anything you need. We're talking any personal items you need, bottled water, and food (if you want something more). It's surprisingly well stocked and convenient.
I did make it over to the Blue Lagoon three times but can't comment on their diving operations or accommodations. The restaurant served great food.
Last note on TrukStop: apparently there are two Hotel web sites active. One works and one doesn't - only one belongs to the TrukStop Hotel. I suggest you contact Kelvin directly at their email:
diveshop@dive-truklagoon.com Kelvin will make your hotel reservations for you, ensure you're met at the airport, and ensure you have a great diving experiance.
I recommend you get a copy of Dan Bailey's book on operation Hailstone and the wrecks of Truk Lagoon. You can't get a better insight into the wrecks and it's perfect for planning which wrecks you'll want to dive. There are something-like 52 of them, plus other attractions (planes) , and they're all great!
Safe Diving,
Wil
