In todays Caymanian Compass

I realize that Cayman Airways already does this route, but still gives more options (especially connection wise) for our US friends to come visit our lovely islands.

Cheers

United plans direct flights to Cayman from DC
|

United Continental Holdings, Inc. - the company that owns two major American airlines - has announced plans to launch service on several new nonstop routes which include a direct flight from Washington DC's Dulles Airport to Grand Cayman.

The plans require approval from the Cayman Islands government prior to the flight routes being instituted.

The new routes were announced Thursday afternoon by the company which said it sought to optimize the combined route networks of United Airlines and Continental Airlines. The new routes were due to begin in 2011, according to a press release on the United Airlines website.

Cayman's Department of Tourism just announced last month its plans to restart direct flights to Washington DC and Chicago on Cayman Airways ahead of the tourism high season.

The Washington, DC service on Cayman Airways is set to begin on 18 December and runs twice-weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays until 30 April. Flight KX590 departs Grand Cayman for Dulles International Airport at 9am, arriving at 12.30pm. On the return, flights depart Washington DC at 2pm, arriving at 5.30pm.

Also for the high season, service between Grand Cayman and Chicago O’Hare Airport begins on 21 November with flights operating on Wednesdays and Sundays. Flight KX504 departs Grand Cayman at 8.15am and arrives at Chicago O’Hare International Airport at 11.10am. On the return, flight KX 505 departs Chicago at 12.40pm, and arrives in Cayman at 5.35pm.

United Continental did not announce any plan for direct service between Chicago and Cayman.

The seasonal flights on national carrier Cayman Airways open up routes for the high season, which tourism professionals hope will help boost visitors over the coming months.

United announced this last week.

The plans require approval from the Cayman Islands government prior to the flight routes being instituted.

Be interesting to see if the Government approves this, or just gives support to the national carrier.

We certainly hope that they will approve and also get the ORD - GCM flight going with United!
