I hear what you're saying; the flip side is I've had other computers (Aeris Atmos) that want to sell you want amounts to a $2.00 USB cable with a custom connector (but a USB none the less) for $50.
At least with the IRIS I can see there is a little more to it (albeit not necessarily the best solution), not just a cheapo cable marked up 2500%.
The moral of the story is Mares isn't alone in this regard, unfortunately.
