I just bought a proton metal with a 42 first stage off ebay (including all maintanance notes), only thing is, i'm not sure if it has a V42 or MR42 first stage.

i hear that they performe similarly, but am only curious.

the reg has a simple black ring at the top, not the cap on the newer ones.

sn: VQ12685

thanks in advance!

If you post a photo of the 1st stage, I can tell you for certain.

That is a V42. It used the SCS (Spherical Core Seal System) for the HP valve assembly. The MR42 uses a tri-material HP valve, that is very similar to the ones used in other current Mares diaphragm regs. You cannot convert a V42 into a MR42, but there is no need to do so. Parts will be available for the V42 for a long time.
