I have a sizing question about the Waterproof W4 wetsuit, which I hoped you might be able to answer.
I realize that it is difficult to discuss sizing without seeing the suit in person, but here goes:
I recently tried on the W4 wetsuit in both ML and Large, as I was right on the cusp between ML and Large.

I initially decided to go smaller, since I read that the suits run a little large.
I tried on the ML and it fit well, so I ordered the L for comparison, but ended up more confused than confident.

The ML fits snug, but not uncomfortable or restrictive. The wrists and ankle length is great. The elbow and knee articulations settle where they are supposed to.
It is snug across my upper torso, but I have full range of motion in my arms. I can "bear hug" in front of me and raise both arms above my head.

The lower back area of the ML suit sits flush with my lower back when I am standing straight, but does "trampoline" a bit when I bend forward.

The legs do feel snug (no uncomfortable), and I feel a bit of the rubber-bandy sort of feeling in them when I kneel, squat or sit, but my range of motion is not constricted by the suit.

The only issue is through the seat/buttocks area. When I bend over, I feel it tug where the zipper ends at the lower back. I still have full range of motion, but my concern is whether this strain, over time, is going to cause the seams to rip.

I hadn't noticed it in previous wetsuits I've worn and attribute it to the back zipper on the W4 coming down a bit further than standard suits.

When I put on the Large, it definitely dons and dofs much easier than the ML, and fits slightly less snug than the ML, but is not loose.

The lower back area does have some more room between my skin and the fabric, but is not loose either.

Overall, it does feel like I have a bit more room in the suit, but nothing severe.
I haven't taken either suit in the water, but I would imagine that going into the water would loosen the suit slightly. So, I'm concerned the Large might become too big in the water, even though it is comfortable on land.

However, I've also heard that neoprene shrinks over time, so I don't know if I should go with the large in anticipation of it shrinking.

Based on this information, do you have any suggestion on what size I should go with?
If you need me to proved any other info I can do so.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Giles,
I have a Waterproof W4 myself. My suit is not a perfect fit as I do get a little flushing around the biceps but range of movement is good with a tightish fitting over my torso. I think you should go for the ML if it feels comfy and full movement is ok as I figure with the larger suit you'll have a greater chance of water flushing making you colder.

One thing I do advise with the suit is that for your first dive use plenty of weight - it was a lot more buoyant than I thought it would be. It took about 10 dives to lose a couple of pounds in weighting. Stick a note in your logbook on the weight needed - I should have made a note but didn't which is why I advise you to do it as I cannot remember how much weight exactly I started with - I think it was 10kg and came down to 7kg over 15 dives and I would now use 5Kg with it but as I said I could be wrong on the numbers.

I don't think the seams should be a problem - I would just keep an eye out for the condition of the seams over time.

PS Just remembered that the suit does loosen a wee bit over time so I think the stress on the seams won't really be an issue if the seams are ok to start with.

Thank you for the sanity check on this. I really thought that the ML was the best fit and am glad a more experienced diver concurred on that.
I've tried both of them on several times over several days and the Large just has too much loose fabric in the armpits, lower back, and lap area.
Not an incredible amount, but enough that I can grab the fabric and pull it away from my skin fairly easily.
It really got me thinking about what would happen when it is submerged, and how much water it would take in.
The ML fits really well and I look forward to taking it i the water.
Thanks again!

Agreed on your choice. I own the W4 in Large. With that much play in the large, you will not be happy as I agree that you will get some degree of breakin. I lean towards the tightest fit that still allows for full range of motion.

Good luck with the suit! I have loved mine!

Matt,

Thank you. The ML is what I am going with. I’m very looking forward to this upcoming dive season!

I allso agree to go for the ML unless you plan to eat a lot for Christmas:)

I would allso agree with the fact that the suit will be very buoyantbin the beggining... so i don't recommend you just to get a bunch of extra weight but to do a buoyancy check. You don't want a carry a bunch of extra kilos wile diving for nothing.

Check some tips about that here:

Enjoy your new suit!!!
