Yeah that's a camcorder. Those small HD-capable video cameras are quite popular nowadays, we have several of them (in various shapes) around too. They all have two things in common: they take pretty good videos, and still photos coming out of them suck, badly.
The same is true for photo cameras, they take good photos, but videos aren't up to par with what a camcorder in the same price range can deliver. It's why you don't try to put a nail into the wall with a screwdriver...
