On the whale shark trips, you go snorkelling (not diving) with the whale sharks. As to where the trip takes place...Generally people who are staying in Playa go on a whale shark excursion which leaves Playa in the morning and then get on a boat in Cancun. From there the boats go north of Cancun to the Isla Contoy area where you´ll find the whale sharks.
It really is an amazing experience to swim with the largest fish on the planet - it is truly awesome to be right beside one of these giants! Often, you´ll get to see mantas and dolphins as well. If you ask your dive shop in Playa del Carmen, they can probably arrange a tour for you.

Just got back - we did the whale sharks as a family. Didn't see as many as OP, but we got some good runs in there. One of our friends even had a big ol' pilot fish hanging off his port side. The coolest thing for me was the mantas - they were jumping left and right. A 10 meter manta doing a backflip out of the water was amazing.
