Wow...after reading more about Bob's liveaboard experiences, I have to say that it would be fun to try that for sure! However, if I were to plop down the cash for that I'd better be sure to take ALL my posessions in with my dive gear. Otherwise, my wife will have them sold by the time I returned and invested in having the locks on the doors changed. (sigh) Ah, well. One can dream.

Hey, think there's any chance that the NOAA boats will invest in those kinds of amenities?

Thanks for showing me what I'm really missing out on. I guess if I skip vacations for about 3-4 years I could afford that. Guess thats something to shoot for.

We saved and planned for two years for that trip. What I did was start an account and have money automatically deducted into it from my paycheck every pay period. Since I never saw the money, I didn't spend it on other things ... and learned to set my budget accordingly. By the time we had to pay for the trip, there was over $5,000 in the account ... it was almost like finding money you didn't know you had.

Big trips are often a once-in-a-lifetime experience. They're worth taking the time to plan and prepare for ... besides, it gives you time to research, anticipate, and dream about the coming adventure ... :D

Bob, either way you've got a hideous amount of money lying around. I'd probably find 100 dollar bills stuffed into shoes in your garage.

My idea of a luxury trip is a free one. :D i'm used to diving from wooden bumboats and rusty ladders with hardly a square foot of space to rig up from and even then, i love them because they're FREE. No diving cost, no accom cost, no airfare, nada! FREE.

although I would like a 100 foot yacht of my own with a competent crew and swedish 20 something year old giggling all around me. S.I. wont be a waste of time on this trip :D

Not really. I do have a day job that pays reasonably well, but I am far from wealthy. But (a) I don't have any wife or kids to spend my money for me and (b) besides food, shelter and transportation I don't spend my money on much besides scuba diving.

It's all a matter of priorities ...

Bob, that sort of a live aboard, is it something a single person can do, or would I need to bring my own buddy?

Yup. Part "a" in that last post said it all, Bob. Wives and kids do tend to soak up quite a bit of revenue. (Oh, sure, they're WORTH it. Just doesn't leave as much in my account to go toward diving as I would sometimes like. That's life.)

My experience on one dive trip to San Pedro, Belize was one of the best trips I ever had. I stayed at a small resort right on the beach. The dock was right in front of us..about 20 yards. The dive operation stored my dive gear overnight and loaded it on the boat for me every morning. I was served breakfast out on the dock. We then took a dive boat that was usually for 15 divers. Most days it was just three of us..one person driving the boat, the second was the Dive Master leading the dive and the third person was me. On other days it was just me and the Dive Master, he also drove the boat and when we were at the dive site he tied up to a mooring bouy. They also supplied cold drinks. And the the water temperature was a consistent 78 degrees, I never wore my wetsuit the whole week. That was a luxury too. One of my best dive trips!!
