Which place has the best diving?
Negril, Montego Bay, or Ocho Rios. Trying to plan a trip to Jamaica and include diving of course :-D
I was in Jamaica in May. Good diving and Jamaica are kind of contradiction IMHO.

Was in Mo-bay over labor day (just before the storms). It wasn't all that bad. Did 4 dives with the operation at the rose hall beach club. I was the only diver on the boat! The divemaster/captain let me choose the sites and even the departure times -- pretty cool. I didn't see tons of fish. But I did see a 7' eel, 7' nurse shark, few turtles and a huge sting ray. Vis was at least 100'. Temp at depth was mid 80's. I'm sure it's no bonaire (haven't been yet) but it beats NJ! I wouldn't make this a dive trip, but it's fine for a few dives while you're on a "normal" vacation.

I thought I saw a thread around here a while back on how the ocean around Jamaica is coming back to life because of better practices? Of course, when I search for "Jamaica & ocean" I get waaaay too many results...

Easy there CaribQueen,
Willar is entitled to his opinion, too. And he, in no way, was disrespectful to you. It doesn't matter if he was 4 or 40 when you dove Jamaica.
Respect needs to be earned.
Jeesh

There may in fact be such a thread. It must have slipped past me and the other ecologists if it paints Jamaican reefs in a positive light. There are quite a few recent, peer-reviewed research articles that decry the health of Jamaican coral reefs. They're among the worst damaged in the Caribbean, if not the champion.

Here's a couple I yanked off the internet for ya'.
1. A cutesy review by Goreau. He's the big cheese of coral reef health.

2. recent article co-authored by Aronson. He's pretty good too.

I did locate this exceptionally concise report from ReefBase. It does describe marginally improved conditions in specific areas, albeit with many "buts" added in. My professional interpretation of this article would be that Jamaican reefs are still quite trashed, and the ones near populated areas show little if any relief. It DOES list regions that are in better shape; might want to check out those spots for diving.

Whoa! No offense intended or taken. Please notice the "LOL!" Everyone is welcome to state their opinion. I just wanted to convey that it's not a mud pond, which is my only choice at home, and is fun to be had diving. I know Jamaica's not top ten in the world, but there's plenty of fun diving. If diving is the only objective, there are better places. If diving is secondary to the vacation, Jamaica is a fun place to visit and you can get in some fun dives. Now, let's all reduce our consumption and enjoy the view! :)
