I am a complete newbie diver & photogapher. I have the Canon A620 in the Canon housing. I realize I need a strobe and am just getting over sticker shock. I'm looking at the Sea & Sea YS 110 or the Ikelite DS 51 with the manual EV controller. Ikelite makes a big deal of their controller eliminating the "fibre optic "sync cord" nonsense of other strobe systems". Any thoughts on these two strobes? Any thoughts on the pros or cons of the EV Controller versus the fiber optic cord? Are these two strobes too much for a newbie with a Canon A620? Should I be looking lower, maybe the YS27?

Any help is appreciated. I've read all the posts and admit I'm still confused.

I haven't found Sea & Sea's DS-TTL to work very well with this camera, so I the feature set of the two strobes is pretty close. The DS-51 is less expensive. The YS-110 has more power, and the led focus/aiming light. The EV controller places the manual dial closer to you than the dial on the back of the strobe, but optical sync cables aren't easy to deal with.

If I may complicate things, you ought to look at an Inon D-2000 as well. Their optical TTL system works, yielding automatic strobe exposure reliably.
