Hi,

Sorry I dont know if this is the right board but wanted to vent my frustration!

I have been out of diving for a few years due to living in the UK which ha bad weather, and taking up skydiving. I now live somewhere warm all year and so have started up again. 2 Weeks ago I completed Scuba review to brush up on skills and everything was fine so today was planned for a nice boat dive off the coast of the UAE.

For some reason, and the first time in years I have not slept a wink all night. Was due at the Dive Centre at 8am and by 6am I had not been to sleep. I have lay tossing and turning since 11pm and I think I am going to go mad.

Needless to say I was not in any state to dive so had to cancel, but also have to pay for my slot still.

Now I have to wait another week. I cannot believe this. Any similar experiences?

Sorry, but had to vent :)

I suffer from serious insomnia. About all you can do is take some good drugs, cut out all the caffeine, and get daily exercise. It helps a lot.

yea but I have since taken care of it. I am now prescribed Ambien CR2 Works wonders!

I'm a terrible sleeper and sympathize. The bright side is that I sleep like a log after a day of diving. It's another fringe benefit of the sport.

I'm a sufferer too ... have gone 3 nights straight with next to no sleep a number of times. That makes you go barking mad. I can function pretty much fine on no sleep for one night - after a while, you get used to it!

You're just anxious - and you need to be careful you won't be the next night before a dive ... best thing to do, in my opinion, is to take a good sleeping aid and have a dive scheduled for the afternoon so it'll have fully worn off and the chance it hasn't won't be on your mind. I'd recommend temezepam (works well with me!) but you might have trouble getting hold of some :) Ask your friendly local drug dealer for some jellies!

Looks like you're in the UAE, so no idea what is available over the counter ... but if nothing else, have a couple of beers, relax and take it easy the night before giving yourself plenty of time before your afternoon dive.

A lot of people have difficulty getting to sleep for a whole stack of reasons. I'm assuming your post is saying that you didn't get to sleep because you were "thinking about the dive the next morning".

Scheduling some dives in the afternoon certainly seems to be a good idea. Be careful about the use of certain drugs to aid sleep, they may have an effect on you when diving.

You appear to be a young man and in good health. Probably the best advice I can give you is that if you don't sleep, just get up, go diving, finish, have lunch with a beer and have a nap in the afternoon.

There are plenty of people here who've been diving without sleeping the night before. As soon as you are under the water you should be fine.

In the almost 70 years that I have been around I have experienced the inability to go to sleep quite a few times. I found a remedy for his problem in the 60's when I was traveling around the country. If I didn't go to sleep within about twenty minutes after laying down I would take a couple doubles of Jack and roll a fat one. Usually I went off to bye-bye land right away.

Take two Aspirin a Melatonin get a good nights sleep and post in the morning!

Jack Daniels and Ibuprophin for me. How can poster have anxiety about diving but jump out of an airplane?

Pure excitement and anticipation!!! The night before going fishing when I was a kid was the same for me.. Get up really early the day before and force yourself not to take a nap.. and enjoy that feeling.. seems like the older we get the harder it is to get excited about something...:eyebrow:
