The mrs. has accepted a new position in Plano and I guess I'll tag along for the ride  She starts on May 31st and don't know exactly when I'll be down (coming from New Jersey), 'cause I need to get the house sold or rented. Hoping to be down July at the latest. Anyway, I'll be in need of some new dive friends who can show me what there is to dive in the area. I'm spoiled by being 1 hr from the Jersey shore where I can hop on a boat and get out. I know the Gulf is faaarrrr away and not always an available option. I know that there's lakes in the area though and getting wet is getting wet. Hopefully, some of you will have some sympathy and take me for a spin.

Also, we'll be in corporate housing for the 1st 2 mos. but will need to be looking for a good area to live. We were in the area last week and looked in Plano and Frisco, but didn't like the "cookie cutter" housing. We would be looking for something like the Oak Cliff area style of housing (but without the long commute to Plano for the mrs.) or Highland Park area (but without that price tag). If anyone has ideas, could ya PM me, 'cause we just don't know that much about the area. Also, not sure if we're going to rent 1st or buy 1st.

Thanks

Welcome to TX. There's usually a decent amount of us doing something in the water. Its not the ocean, but like you said, its water.

As for the housing situation, you have a pretty decent grasp of the situation here :)

Welcome in advanced to Texas Francousteau. You will find no shortage of willing divers here. CSSP in Terrell is only about an hour from Dallas. Athens isn't much farther and Lake Travis is 3 hours or so and everyday someone is under water. Just post (or sometimes just show up) and someone will be more than happy to buddy up with you..

Welcome to Texas... I am trying to sell my house in the Oak Lawn area, but it's only 1117 sqft. Dont know if you want to be that cozy. :) But Oak Lawn is your hidden secret to be groovy & cool & cheaper than Uptown.

Welcome to the area soon. We are always happy to have new people join.

Once you're settled in, we'll have to find a way to get you out to the gardens.

Cookie cutter houses... now who have I heard make that complaint before????

Yeah, it's not easy to find something that's not cookie cutter if it's less than 20 years old.

this site has a rather comprehensive list of diveable locale's in the lone star state Dive Around Texas 2010 whatever you do, make sure to hit possum kingdom, lake travis, and the texas flower gardens (northernmost coral reef in the world).

Thanks to everyone for the "welcome" and for the listed dive sites. I've read the sticky re: what's your favorite dive sites, so I'm at least familiar with the names of the sites. Is it mandatory to drag a flag along when diving these lakes? Is "buddy diving" mandatory? Of course in NJ there's no flags (it's on the boat) and buddy diving is totally optional and I prefer to forego that option because I penetrate and don't want anyone stirring the silt. However, with the new move I'd like to hook up with others to show me the new sites. Looking forward to meeting everyone. Thanks Franco

Welcome to Texas! And let's get something straight right from the beginning...it's "ya'll", not "ya" down here. Mastering that fact will go a long ways in helping you aclimate to your new surroundings.

Yup, sounds like you have seen lists of the most common dive sites in the area. Others will require a little travel, but they're usually worth the drive (or flight), although they may be quite different from those to which you are accustomed. I firmly believe you'll find no shortage of willing locals with both the means and inclination to share their insights concerning the diving down here. "Swampers" are a pretty friendly lot, and someone is diving just about any time you want to go and are willing to buddy up at the drop of a hat.

Let us know when you arrive, and we'll make it a point to plan some diving activities. Again, welcome to Lone Star diving!

1. Is it mandatory to drag a flag along when diving these lakes?
2. Is "buddy diving" mandatory?

First I'll also say welcome and I'm sure yall are going to like the great state of TEXAS :D
To your questions.....
1.Drag a flag, well not normally but in some places it might not be a bad idea.
2.Is "buddy diving" mandatory, I only know of one place it is and that is Aquarena Springs (but there could be more).

I know several "Solo" divers and hey at my favorite pond Lake Travis about half of the time you are solo diving even with a buddy and you don't have to worry about your buddy stirring the silt, it comes pre-stirred! :cool2:

Yall come on down to Austin and lets dive!!

Okay, now...Paul, that is funny! True, but humorous nonetheless.
