Here is some information on their plans to kill the spill: Oil Spill TRIPLED In Size In 3 Days (VIDEO)

Mainly, they are thinking either dropping some huge boxes on top of the spill and pump it to a boat at the surface.

Here is an image of the spill so far:

I'm not trying to turn this thread into the war that's going on in the Basic Scuba forum, but that seems like a pretty gross misrepresentation of what's really out there. It looks like ABC just took MS paint to the USFWS federal fishing boundaries. Don't get me wrong, this is terrible, but I personally don't think that's a very reliable report. Also, nobody really knows how much oil is leaking out. Conservative reports are saying 2,000 barrels/ day (I think it's a lot more than that), and others are saying 200,000. I just hope they can get the problem taken care of before the gulf turns into a polluted graveyard.

I agree... that looks quite a bit different from what even the news reports are showing(right now).

This reminded me of the Tugg Speedman movie in Tropic Thunder :rofl3: :rofl3:

Conservative reports are saying 2,000 barrels/ day (I think it's a lot more than that), and others are saying 200,000.

Your units of measure are incorrect is why you are confused about the amount. When they are speaking of 200,000 they are not meaning barrels, they mean gallons. The current reports are 5,000 barrels a day which equals 210,000 gallons. Each barrel is about 42 gallons roughly so even at 2,000 barrel "trying to be conservative" it would mean 84,000 gallons. They determined the 5,000 barrel rate and expect it to be higher based on the size of the slick using satelite images.

Good luck to the folks along the Gulf coast in dealing with the Deep Horizon spill and to the rest of us east should the spill make it that far. Put together some links and information about the spill, response and impacts in one place at:

Mixed bag of latest news:

  • Saying now it will hit Alabama Thursday or later.
  • The actual surface area of the spill has shrunk, which they believe means more of the volume of the leak has moved sub-surface.
  • Wind, currents seem to be moving the bulk of the spill South.
  • Loop current may actually take the spill out through the straights of Florida, which might help us, but would suck for the Keys.
  • BP made efforts to shut a valve on one of the smaller leaks yesterday, and we should hear today if they were successful.

Update from CCA Alabama:
We regret to inform you that one of the pieces of information we received, and passed on to you yesterday, was incorrect. The two online courses we listed may not be required.

As of yesterday afternoon, the Coast Guard had not officially determined exactly what training will be required for volunteers helping with the mitigation and restoration phases of the operation.

Stand by for updates on hazardous materials training requirements.

A light north wind is helping keep the oil from reaching Alabama's coastline today. The revised estimate of the time of landfall is sometime on Thursday. Crews are hard at work placing boom around our environmentally sensitive areas, and some environmental groups are doing beach cleanup before the oil reaches the beaches. The details of the oil cleanup won't be finally determined until the Coast Guard examines the exact nature of the material that reaches our coast.

Please continue to stand by for information from CCA. The response to the spill has been overwhelmingly gratifying. We have a splendid team standing by to help, and we are deeply grateful for your concern for our coastal resources.

Thanks again for your willingness to help conserve our coastal marine resources.
