At Barefoot Key (BFK), you will be located at the far Western end of the "sweet spot" that is the South side's dive sites. Just like any dive-op, they will take you where they will take you. They have some very experienced DM's who are very familiar with the area.
This South side area is well known for shallow, vertical Sunlit walls that break in 5~35fsw and go straight down to the first sand shelf in 90fsw. Once you get your buoyancy and demonstrate good control, you'll likely enjoy the single most requested dive on the island, Mary's Place, which is right in front of Barefoot Key.
Maybe you will pick and choose what days you will dive, but if they offer up either of the two intact placed wrecks, which include Mr. Bud and Prince Albert, be sure to be on that trip.
Roatan is indeed a small island, but with time you realize how remote each housing option can be. BFK is certainly no exception as it is on it's own small island, located a few meters offshore from the port city of French Harbour. You will be diving with their in-house dive op, or you will be spending a lot of time to go with someone else... not sure why you would bother.
As with any destination, many visitor come to the discussion groups and inquire as to what are the "must dive" spots. This unfortunate terminology and thought process is a weird monster created by dive magazines. The "must dives" of Roatan (and other islands) changes during each insertion of an
advertorial over a year's timeframe. It's kind-of a goofy list, no matter which rock in the Caribbean they are accepting advertising from.
DM's want you to be dazzled, but will do it within your demonstrated skill level. On day one, most all groups are taken to a site so they may test their weighting and re-familiarize themselves with the act of diving. That means: no delicate coral bottom to go ker-plunk upon, just some nice sandy patch at 35fsw, and then a bit of a swim. All sorted out? Good, now we'll show you some cool stuff.
Wherever you go, each dive op has a weekly set pattern, variable for wind and wave, but largely predictable. Resorts have scheduled dive times at sites like Mary's Place, Tuesday through Thursday is the hot times. Just relax, work on your technique. If the divemaster isn't showing you a Seahorse every day or so, if he doesn't show you at least one Pipefish... it might be a poor DM or it might be your observational skills... he should be able to help you! Be sure to ask how to see these things! This area is known for the small citters. Not as easy to see as a Lobster, Barracuda, or a Grouper, but you'll see plenty of those after a bit of diving.
In short, sit back, enjoy the ride. BFK is very new but has good comments here. Be sure to leave a trip report upon your return. Take lots of pix of the resort, the dive operation and the boats.... nothing has been posted here in detail.
This is a great time of year to come to Roatan- the water column is teeming with life, and along the South side reef, this is the incubator of the Caribbean.
