I do appreciate the posting of the dive accidents to start intelligent discussion, however, these newspaper accounts are usually pretty poorly written, lacking any real facts and often just plain wrong.

Keep up the good work, Don. I too appreciate these stories that, while usually lacking certain facts and typically written by those lacking much if any knowledge of scuba, at least reveal an incident and some circumstances. Ultimately, these posts precipitate discussion, awareness, and keeps the names of those who've been injured or died in our minds and hearts.

At the end of the day, if one doesn't like these threads, one may stop reading the forum or opening them. Pretty simple.

keep it up. Awareness in our community is vital for discussion. If the sharing and analysis of these incidents prevents just one diver from dying it is the single most important ScubaBoard could contribute to the diving community.

And the non-diving public reads these reports and thinks we're all crazy danger junkies.

please post more details if found.

I just get tired of one or two people always posting death notices where nothing is to be learned. People did 50 pages on Coz accident and only thing learned is don't do it. Yes unfortunately I know this person through alot of other diver friends. Another note, I have been on several death dives and searches and still with personnel knowledge rarely was to learn anything about the cause. I guess I don't look at the newspaper everyday to see motorcycle accidents in this state and I know there are many more of them.

I don't think DandyDon searches for anything. He has a Google (or some other) bot set up to glean the internet for stories and they're delivered to his email. His contribution is appreciated.

If you think there is nothing to be gained or learned from these posts, who's twisting your arm to come here and read them? I suppose if I didn't care for reading about motorcycle accidents, I would simply not go to the section of the newspaper that lists out motorcycle incidents.

This is a "hostile" environment we choose to pursue our jollies in. Regardless of training/comfort level/whizbang equipment, accidents will happen. Thus, we find A&I reports in endeavours like scuba or skydiving forums. Prior to the internet, we heard of accident reporting by word-of-mouth, or after some time had passed, in print. Nowadays, it's practically instantaneous. Some, will choose to pursue these reports with morbid curiosity, while the majority of us will attempt to glean valuable educational information which cumulatively should keep us that much more on our toes. These reports should be practically required reading for ALL divers, whether new, old, bold...

It would certainly be much better to get the reports from knowledgeable dives with local information. It's unfortunate that we have to start with online news articles. :shakehead:

I'm sure others could learn if more info were made available. :idk: There are some obvious suspicions already evident here.

It'd be great if you'd like to start a Passings thread for the young man, even if you don't want to add anything useful here.
