My buddy (wife) and I carry two different ones. Her's is a 4 foot oral inflated. Mine is 6 foot and pretty large diameter.

We dive quite a bit in Cozumel and usually use hers in calm conditions lots of waves and wind we will use mine and

inflate it with the AAS. I have to agree on that practise statement you can do it on or before your SS. Oh yeah be sure

the finger spool or reel plays out the line freely.. I have seen someone yanked up by that SMB too .. Yes it was me..

Tip: Be sure the SMBs have a Over Pressure Valve
Thanks for all the tips.

Noted. Thanks. But would you prefer the oral inflated type or the Alternate air source inflation type??

Or just get one that offers both inflation method??

I've seen myself diver inflating an SMB with AAS and it shot up with the diver.

My thinking is using an oral inflation type can be more easily controlled.

Thanks. Noted.

Yeah... Actually, I'm a Malaysian and it's currently monsoon season. So, east coast of peninsula is closed and I couldn't wait till next year to taste the salt water again.

Personally I prefer oral inflation, easier to control buoyancy by exhaling into the SMB.

Use the search function for SMB and DSMB and you will find a lot of information on SB or try Google / You Tube, there are a few examples of how NOT to use an SMB :D

As Storker mentioned, practice is important, I probably use mine on every other dive, and certainly on all of my tech dives, and sometimes I don't always get it right

I know the monsoon is about to start and that rules out the the east coast, and the west coast does not have a lot to offer. I was not too impressed by Pulau Payer near Langkawi, although through a friend of mine in Penang I did return on his boat and we made several dives on a couple of occasions but that was almost 20 years ago.

If you can get over to Sabah, there is some better diving not affected by the monsoon.

I regularly dive in the ocean with the water looking like that (damn that Orinoco). The moon does have an effect on our viz... diving after full moon is white out...

wrt to your experience the only thing i would say is:

1. Carry lights, they help alot in low vis
2. Don't do the safety stop if you lose your buddy or the DM (it means you go further and further away from the boat in drift conditions)
3. If diving in the ocean anywhere with currents or boat traffic... buy and learn to use a DSMB

seems like it was handled well considering though

You should ALWAYS dive with a light, an SMB and a mirror, bad or good visibility. The 3 items can be very useful if you surface away from the boat :)

I always carry one (DSMB and a spool), and deploy as needed.

One of my favourite examples on the web of how to do it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtpoGCzVWZs

He should have checked over his shoulder to see that there was no one above, but as an example of control, and unhurried deployment, it's pretty solid.

And my favourite example on how not to do it is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KpZe7A1NqU

I expect he'd been at it for a while. Note the internationally recognised gesture of frustration at 0:14...

Good thing he didn't get any air in it.
