hi guys thinking of going to cozumel feb 17, is this a good idea to stay on cozumel or be based at
playa del carmen, going for 10 days, had a chat with pro dive, and they seem to have a good deal,
or what other dive centres are there out there, thanks sam.

On Cozumel, if you're coming for the diving especially.
There are somewhere in the neighborhood of 175 dive operations here on island. Decide what you're looking for, give some specifics, and I'm sure you will get plenty of suggestions.
Bienvenidos!

Contact dive with martin, i just booked with them and they give me an excellent price for 16 days and 10 days for the girlfriend. Free rentals as well.

I would also decide if you want a resort/AI experience in the south vs staying in town for food and nightlife.

A lot would depend on how many days you're going to dive, and what else you want to do.

The cost of the ferry adds up, if expense is a factor, and also the timing of the ferries if your dive op is one of the very early ones.

The appeal to staying on the mainland is really a function of what else interests you. Day trips from Cozumel are difficult and hectic if you want to travel very far. For example, a trip to one of the ruins, (Ek Balam is the cream of the crop), would be a very, very long day if you were based on the island. Some might say that there's plenty of time, but it would require "powering" through, and it's deserving of so much more than that.

Staying In Playa gives you the option of many, many more beaches if sandy beaches are important to you, many, many more restaurants if you're foodies, a lot more entertainment/music options if you need to kick up your heels. Those benefits come with costs; expense, NOISE, and lots of humans.

Cozumel is less expensive, and more relaxing. Yes, there are more options on the mainland, but it's not like Cozumel is in the middle of a desert; you just have to dig a bit more.

As above. If diving a lot is high on the list stay on the island. However it it's secondary to doing lots of exploring, shopping, walking sandy beaches etc the mainland has more to offer.

Definately stay on Coz if diving is the goal. Aldora and Tres Pelicanos have huge followings on this board. Dive with Martin is probably the oldest operation on the island and for good reason. Great service, best deal, and free rentals if needed. Blue magic has great deals for sleep and dive packages and it's like diving with family. Blue XTSea is a huge supporter of this site as well and deserves a chance at your business.

We stay in town mostly because everything is within walking distance and the Aldora pier is 1/2 block from Casa Mexicana. The island has a distinctive Carribbean feel and the people are warm and friendly. Definately different than the mainland. The resorts on the south end of the island have nice beaches if that's your thing.

As far as which dive op, there are so many to choose from, you just have to find what is right for you. Search my posts and I have listed the differences several times.

Good luck, safe travels. My guess is if you go to Coz, my guess is you will be back. We will be there Thursday for Day of the Dead.

Isn't Feb 'El Norte' season ?
Well, yes, but so what? Dive days always far outnumber non-dive days on Cozumel no matter what the season.

If diving is the point of the trip, stay on Cozumel. If non stop partying and the occasional dive is what you are looking for, stay on the mainland.

The mainland is a lot more than non-stop partying. A lot more.
