This is a pretty marginal tropical storm at this time, and likely to remain so when passing Cozumel. The storm is moving very fast and I'd be surprised if there was any residual affect on Cozumel diving past Saturday or Sunday at the latest. Remember the northbound current pretty well flushes poor vis to Cuba in a day or two.

Some low lying areas in Cozumel may get a little water but that happens almost all the time.

BTW, 3 to 4 weeks of bad viz has never been seen, not even after Hurricane Wilma in 2005 (cat 5 storm that sat on Cozumel for 36 hours).

I was in Isla Mujeres 2 weeks after Earl passed over Belize
The North Atlantic Gyre circulates water westerly across the lower Caribbean sea, then is turned north as it hits Belize, and the Cozumel channel current is part of that giant gyre. The current must have accumulated trash, debris, dirt, etc as it passed in the storms wake along Honduras and Belize, dragging it north into the Gulf of Mexico.

Just check out how the diving like after Irma in the Keys & Jupiter:
That was a major hurricane, much larger and more powerful than this rain storm called Nate.

I think the visibility has more to do with the deep currents in the main channel. As an example l was down last weekend and the water temps were high @ around 86Fon Saturday. Hazy water conditions, slack current and back eddies, basically it seemed like the water between the reef and shore was stagnating. That evening intermittent heavy rains and standing water in the streets and on Sunday morning the road past Puerto Maya was flooded pretty good. I expected the visibility to be poor but it was just the opposite. Viability was good and cooler waters from depth were spilling up and over the wall and basically flushing the reef. Currents were more normal, nothing excessive but steady in a northerly direction. After heavy rains I think there is a lot of discharge off the lagoon near Cielo which causes visibility issues near Palancar horseshoe but provided the currents are normal they flush the reefs out pretty well.

Good to hear. Please keep us apprised.

That will be good news, if it does happen as you said. Let's hope that is the case.

Well, it did pass with almost no effect on Cozumel, little rain, now at 9 am Saturday the water is like a slight norte. We expect the port to open by noon.
