I used old backplates as guides as well as some pictures from the jet harness site but I played around with slot sizes, angles and plate lengths by making about 8 plywood plates before i settled on the current config. Initially, it seemed a little snug but with the lumbar plate.. its really nice.
you dont really need an sta. if teh plate is stiff enough, the bands will cinch it tight enough so that it will not shift.
I made a diy flat plate single tank rig outta delrin. its in this lnk:

Its quite complicated but ill try to draw up a diagram to explain.
If you look at the attachment, the black section is a delrin spindle and a large spool face with holes like the previous picture. That section is held to gether with epoxy and SS screws.
the blue sections are delrin rings...

AFter doing all that stuff, I turned my attention to my BC. I have been using a scubapro classic for a long time and I wanted to try a BP system. I had lots of material left so I decided to play around with a flat backplate.

I have an Olympus 505 0setup with the Oly housing. It works great but after a few dives, I thought that I would be better off with a tray and handle.

Not sure what kind of 'feel' youre looking for but for an EXTREMELY high 'coolness quotient', you might want to look into 'Crumpler' bags.
www.crumplernyc.com
