    SSI dive leader rate increase

For 2010, payment remained at $70 for DiveCons. At least that's something to be thankful for. Still seems a bit steep, to me, though. :pityparty: Wondering what dues is for equivalent PADI Dive Master is?

    Chris Pruchnic

Chris was an open-water instructor at Denver Divers. He was also a superb athlete, and a member of the American Alpine Society. He passed on Saturday, November 20, 2010 at Rocky Mountain National Park, while ice climbing. Chris had just completed his first 100-mile footrace, and loved to...

Dive tables take a back seat in SSI training

I can't say I know for sure if the latest manuals recommend a backup computer. My manuals are pretty old. I checked the online training, and no mention. However, SSI does have a Computer Diving specialty, which we include as part of the Open Water Diver course at my shop. I'm sure most of...

Dive tables take a back seat in SSI training

SSI has moved dive tables to the Appendix of the Open Water Diving manual, and given Instructors the option to not train with dive tables. As far as I know, the use of computers has not been mandated, however.

    SSI dive leader rate increase

I was a bit surprised to see the annual rate for an SSI DiveCon go from $55 last year, to $70 this year. A 27% increase in renewal rate in a bad economy seems a bit steep. :pirate2: I'm curious what the OWI rates are - I think they were $110 last year.

    diving vs. sport-fishing IRT Oriskany

I just want to preceed the following questions with a statement that I know a little bit about diving, and almost nothing about fishing. When searching the Internet for information about diving the Oriskany, I come across some sites stating good diving, and at least one site proclaiming the...

Stingray kills 'Crocodile Hunter' Steve Irwin

I've been close to the bottom a few times and been surprised by breath-holes opening up below me. It was possible to get stung, but the rays either ignored me as I inhaled and rose, or they just swam off in a huff. It's possible to get stung in the chest in such a scenario, I think. But if...

beached whales got bent avoiding sonar

It seems like there are two issues in this one thread - maybe they should be broken out into two threads: 1. Can whales get DCS? I don't know why it's so hard to believe. It's the same physics that applies to divers, and although our physiology is different, so is our capacity for deep...

    Shark Poll

You need a new category - "seen another diver bitten by shark, but not me". In my case, I watched an a@#hole divemaster in Belize that was feeding nurse sharks. Turned his back on the sharks to give me the OK signal, and one swam over his back and bit his fingers. Was his own fault. Only...

    Slime on wetsuit

I just got a new Excel 4/3 Infiniti wetsuit and spent last week in Fiji diving it. It's a great suit - warm and comfortable. But I noticed that it gave me a bit of a rash on both shoulders by the end of the week. I washed the suit (part of my normal after-trip ritual, using McNett Aquaseal...

    Spotted Eagle Ray behaviour

There may be a number of reasons they do this. I personally have seen a spotted eagle ray in Cayman Brac leap twice out of the water. On the first leap, I saw a LARGE remora attached to it. On the second leap, the remora was flung about ten feet in the air before splashing down in the water...

Red tide or Karenia brevis. (formerly known as Gymnodinium breve)

I lived the first six months of this year in St Pete, and I can testify about the population boom. I worked with some people that were buying home lots and selling them before the units were completed at a good profit. I got to snorkel with the manatees in Crystal river, dive with the...

    Shock tactics to destroy torpedoes

I think our opinions are irrelevant. The US Navy isn't going to politely ask us if they can test this. If the technology exists, they probably already have and will continue to test it, despite what we think.

    Migratory Great whites

That's a huge distance to cover. It would be interesting to try to determine how much energy it required, and how she came by the energy to do it. So, can great whites store up enough body fat to do the trip with only a little food? Or was she able to scavenge enough along the way?
